Casterton High School Reunion
March 2005Over Easter we held an exhibition at the Casterton High School reunion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the move of the school into the present premises. We first collected as many class photographs from the last 50 years as we could find. Then we tried to identify the hundreds or thousands of faces. Then print the photographs and the captions. Putting the exhibition in place was almost the easiest part! Of course the effort didn't end when the reunion was over, Vern is still dealing with the extra information, and corrections.
Instead of photos of the exhibition, we are showing you the procession from the old site to the current school. Several hundred people congregated at the old school, and many of them participated in the march, including Vern McCallum's sister. Vern and his two brothers were also at the reunion.
The old and the new of it. It was great to see generations of the same family attending this event.
Several buses were on hand for those who didn't want to cover the route on foot. This Ansett bus is, apparently, the sole remaining example in Australia.
In the past many of the School's students came by buse from the country areas. Getting trapped by floods was one of the perils of getting to school.
Moving up the main street. It was an impressive and quite emotional sight. Spectators were moved to applaud!
Arriving. It was was difficult to assess total attendance over the two days, as there was never a time when everyone was in the same place. However, it was certainly well over 2,000 and most likely over 3,000.
What ever, the crowd ran Casterton's shops almost completely out of food.
