Events completed in 2005

2005 started at a frantic pace. We have worked with local communities to collect photographs that record their local histories, and this has proved very popular and successful in bringing many new photographs forward. We have also worked with organisations in the community which are trying to improve tourism opportunities and to improve water management. We have had our first opportunity to support a school reunion, which was a lot of work but good fun.

An ongoing commitment to the community has been support of aged care facilities in the Western District. This year we have been rotating several hundred photographs through Seaview House and Lewis Court in Portland, and Edgarly in Casterton. We hear that those living in those facilities take great delight in poring over images that are closely related to their youth.

November, 2005: Powerhouse Car Museum, Glenelg St., Portland - we provided about a dozen photographs of old cars, motorbikes and the like in support of this community Museum.

August 2005: our Annual Exhibition in the Digby Memorial Hall, held over two days during which more than 300 visitors enjoyed the great range of photographs on show, plus the family history section. This year we had considerable community involvement, in particular, the Casterton Historical Society which manned the entry door and a display of their interests, and the ladies of the Digby Memorial Hall Committee who again provided light lunches and teas. Several other groups expressed interest in the Collection participating in their coming events. For more details of the Exhibition, read the detailed write up.

April/May 2005: a weekend exhibition at Byaduk, working with the community to collect and document photographs of the local history.

April 2005: an Anzac Day exhibition at Nelson, working with community organisations to collect and document local historical photographs of Nelson and the nearby area.

March 2005: an Easter exhibition is association with the Casterton High School reunion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the move of the school into the present premises. We first collected as many class photographs from the last 50 years as we could find. Then we tried to identify the hundreds or thousands of faces. Then print the photographs and the captions. Putting the exhibition in place was almost the easiest part! Of course the effort didn't end when the reunion was over, Vern is still dealing with the extra information, and corrections. March 2005: an exhibition to mark the launch by the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority's kit of their River Health Strategy 2004 - 2009. The CMA used photographs from the Collection in this kit.

February 2005: an exhibition at Heywood's Wood, Wine and Roses weekend. This event attracted about 15,000 visitors, a remarkable tribute to the Heywood residents who organise the weekend. Next year we are trying for a bigger display space - this year it seemed that every one of the 15,000 tried to get into our tent! See more here

January 2005: a display in support of Portland Rotary's bid to have the annual Rotary Convention held in Portland.
