The Digby Historic Walk
25/26 August, 2007The Digby Historic Walk again introduced visitors and residents alike to the depth of history that hides behind Digby's modern face. It is easy to forget that Digby was established more than 150 years ago. It has seen three hotels, four churches, three schools and perhaps six shops. It had a Police Station, and a Court House which hosted the first sitting of the Supreme Court outside Melbourne. There are lots of tales to tell.
Looking north towards Merino and Casterton. In earlier times we would have been looking over the Foresters' Hall, Mercer and Southern's store, and the Woolpack Inn. The house is "Leyton", home to many of the Burgess family.
Christine Fidler explains the history of the Digby Hotel which stood in paddock behind her until it burned down. This site yielded many of the items found by metal detector and displayed in the Mechanics Institute.

Saint Johns Anglican Church, one of many sites visited during the Walk. The stained glass windows are very early: we hope to have a detailed discussion of these windows on this web site soon. St Johns 150th birthday will be held in 2011.

Can you spot the distraction(s)? The romantic moon always affects some people, but this day it was aided by Derek Dyer's biplane, which is the dot below and to the right of the moon.
