Walking was a necessity, not an optional form of exercise, when the Western District was first settled by Europeans. Things changed quickly though.

A ladies' outing. The horse, man and child are a lovely sight. Not so sure about the "ladies" here. She is parked in front of the "groceries, wines and spirits" sign on a Merino shop (1912).
