At the Merino downs homestead circa 1868
Mrs Francis Henty on the steps, Francis Henty to the left, Louisa in the light dress, Maryanne Fulton beside her, Carrie and Alice [beside the bush], Alice Lawrence in foreground.
In 1836 Major Mitchell met the Henty's at Portland following his overland travels from the north. His reports of Australia Felix prompted the pioneers to explor the area, and in August 1837 Stephen Henty drove sheep onto Merino Downs near Henty( his son Richmond Henty was born at the same time). A home was eventually constructed and by the 1880's had a flouishing garden and such amenities as a croquet lawn.
