The population of Aborigines in the Portland Bay District in 1839 numbered some 600 native people. The Eurite tribe ,which dwelt in the immediate vicinity of the town site now known as Portland ,were driven out of their home territory by white men before 1834. Edward Henty noted in his diary,January 1835,that there had been no natives seen near the place since he first landed in the previous November.
