GLENELG INN, CASTERTON.
ALEXANDER McKINLAY OPENED THE GLENELG INN, IN SEPTEMBER 15, 1846. John Thomas Richardson Built the inn. The building was made of slabs carted to the site as Back Loading for Wool Teams from Portland.
McKinlay's intention was to have the Inn built on the Hamilton side of the Glenelg river but when Edward Henty advised McKinlay that he would oppose the issue of the hotel license if the hotel was built on this site, with the power Henty had in the area, McKinlay decided to remove his timber to the other side of the river where he was given permission to build on part of the Spring Bank station then managed by William McEachern. This is the present site of the Glenelg Hotel.
