Granny McCallum in front of the Church of England at Digby. Note the bell tower on the church, this was removed as the ringing of the bell was cracking the church foundations. She was Married to Donald McCallum Digby's first wheelwright and Coffin Builder. The Church of England, , DIGBY ~1890
Congregations proudly built places of worship early in the establishment of towns - Cusack Russell, the travelling Anglican minister, laid the foundation stone for St. John's Anglican Church at Digby in 1860. Pictured in the foreground is Mrs Donald McCallum, She was the town's 'Salvationist' in the truest sense: not only was she in the 'Army' but she was the midwife, herbal remediest and prayer over the deceased, for which her husband made the coffins. Between them they had the town covered - one brought them in, and the other took them out! She is the great-grandmother of exhibition co - host Vern McCallum.
